i named my luxray river, here's my logic,
Shinx= Great shphinx in egypt = Cleopatra queen of egypt = river song because she dressed up as cleopatra once in doctor who, therefor my luxray's name is river.

Previously I commented on how I made a theme of nicknaming my Pokémon of the letters of the Greek alphabet.
Well on HeartGold I've come up with another one. My character is the girl named Autumn. Silver's name is Winton and my Pokémon so far have the nicknames:

I usually name my pokes with some relevance to the pokes, or at least their names.
For example, in my latest playthrough of platinum, I had a Gible named pedigree. the reasoning behind this is gible sounds like kible, dog food basically, and Pedigree is a company that makes dog food.
I also have a Serperior named Grassilisk(Somewhat creative on my part)
But the cream of the crop for me was my nicknames for Dialga, Palkia, And Giratina. Dialga's being TimeReach, Palkia's being SpaceGrasp, and Giratina being DeathStorm.
I also have a Hydreigon named R.E.U.D.(A cookie to anyone who knows what that abreviates)

I've always wished that I could get into the habit of nicknaming my Pokemon. I feel that you develop a bond with them when you do so. However, I'm not like that. I'd ditch my starter in a heartbeat if its offspring had better stats.

I normally nickname my Pokemon (unless I'm doing a mono-Pokemon challenge or catching useless Pokemon to trade with my friend).
Pokemon that I want to use for a team, such as my starter, I'll put a lot of thought into their nickname, where as other Pokemon tend to be nicknamed after, say, what's on tv at the time or something (so, while watching a cooking show I end up with Pokemon named Chicken, Pork, Cayenne, etc).
As I am often half-watching tv while I'm playing Pokemon or half-asleep, then I'll normally combine words I hear around me, or make something up.
I pretty much play with words, really.
